Packard Bell: Platinum 2220, Part 1

Platinum 2220

We have a new addition to our retro computing playground: the Packard Bell Platinum 2220, including original monitor and accessories. Specs:

  • Model: Platinum 2220
  • CPU: Intel Pentium 200mhz with MMX
  • RAM: 16GB (2x 8GB and 2x open slots)
  • BIOS version: 1.00.08.DN0R
  • HDD: Seagate Medalist 2.11GB 4500rpm (ST32132a)
  • FDD: 1.44MB 3.5″ floppy drive
  • CD: 16x IDE CDROM
  • Sound III Combination 33.6K modem & sound card

Packard Bell Monitor

The monitor is Model 3020, manufactured in July 1995. According to pbplanet.info, it has a 17″ tube with 15.8″ diagonal view, and attached speakers. The speakers are dubbed as a Sound Retrieval System (SRS).

The specs match up exactly with specs from pbplanet.info and specs from packardbell.com archive for the Platinum 2220. This model was released in spring of 1997, which is inline with the “B” release of Windows 95 seen on this system. While the case had clearly been opened before, this system doesn’t seem to have been upgraded or modified in any way.

Packard Bell MediaSelect

Something I had not seen before is the MediaSelect button panel, which the monitor sits on top of and connects via the PS/2. Currently the MediaSelect buttons are not functioning, so we will try finding the original Packard Bell install packages / utilities and see if that brings it back to life.

I haven’t yet found an original advertisement for the Platinum 2220, however here is an ad for the 2240 from PC Mag Feb 1997 which had some more RAM and a video capture card for $2700.
